Moengo, Suriname…

Tuesday July 14, 2015

I arrived in Moengo, Suriname today. It is about a 2 hour drive Southwest of Paramaribo, more toward the Interior of the Country. The roads were much better (for 80%) of the trip than those going to Nickerie.

As we got closer to the City of Moengo, I saw small villages set back off the road side. Many of these small Villages. Imagine if you were driving down a two lane highway along a rural area in the United States, then out of no where you look and saw literally a plot of land, cleared from the bushes, set back approximately 50 yards from the road. A small village with people, Surinamese African peoples who live off the land. They are referred as you will, as legal Squatters. The take over a plot of land for about two years, clear it, build huts, and homes from the local wood, and local provisions from the forest. They hunt in the jungle and bring back food. They are 100% self sufficient from the land. For approximately 20 – 30 Kilometers I would see at least 12 – 15 of these small villages.

After about a two hour drive we reached Moengo. We entered the City on roads that are deplorable. I am shocked that any of these cars still have their suspensions in tact. This entire Village was once (approximately two or three years ago) a Bauxite Mining operation. It was the first and only Bauxite Mine in all of Suriname. The major company set up shop in this City complete with Shopping, Hospitals, schools, etc. The company has decided to leave Moengo and turned over the property to the State. Think about what happens when something is turned over to the Government to run… Yes, you got it… Government Housing. Picture the WORST Government Housing complex in America; now multiply that by 15, and add 4 to that number and you begin to see what I am speaking of in this area.
The people are wonderful. So very welcoming and inviting. I have good living conditions comparable to the norm here. I am blessed to be able to stay in a room in the basement of the home of a local couple that rents these basement rooms out for additional income. Basement, damp, moldy, (I won’t talk about the smell in the bathroom), but THANK GOD THERE IS AN AIR CONDITIONER IN MY ROOM!!!

Tuesday night, I am to preach in a local Church, called St. Therese the little flower. Beautiful small Church that holds about 100 people. I have been asked to preach on Deliverance.

We had literally about 200 plus people show up for this “Prayer Meeting”. Yes, Charismatic Catholic’s you just heard the “code words”. It was the weekly Charismatic Prayer meeting, but they heard about this preacher from America, so the normal 20 – 30 people who come, turned into almost 200 people gathered inside and OUTSIDE of the Church to hear.

After preaching, I offered to pray over everyone who wanted personal prayer, of which I did for about 3 hours after preaching. I remember one woman coming up to ask for prayer and it was translated to me that her husband has passed away about two years ago and she believed that she and her children have a “spell” cast upon them and she wanted prayers of Deliverance from that ‘spell’. People asking for prayers from back problems, high blood pressure, diabetes, and one man came in a wheel chair. This man had an accident at work 3 years ago leaving him with no feeling from the waist down. He is married and has 4 children. When I asked him what he wanted prayer for, and what he wanted God to do for him, he said simply, that my family will be provided for. That my family will not have to struggle.

Your help and love offerings are going to touching the lives of so many people here in the City of Moengo and the surrounding Villages. Bringing a sense of love to those here.

Answering the Bell

Preaching the Word

Preaching the Word

Where do you begin to tell a story of a History making day for a people of Faith and a Nation?

On Saturday July 12, 2015 history will be made here in the Republic of Suriname in South America. I have been asked to be the Keynote Speaker of this nations FIRST EVER Catholic Men’s Conference!

Unable to sleep the night prior but three hours, I really did not want to get up, but I knew I had to because many people were waiting and counting on me. I stayed up last night writing and praying and meditating on what the Lord might be asking of me today? I wanted to have something prepared in my talks and especially my homily for the Mass. Yes I said homily, as many of you know I am NOT a Priest or a Deacon, yet I am a Roman Catholic LAY (non-ordained) Evangelist. In this particular diocese due to the shortage of Priest’s (USCCB take note), specifically trained lay people are allowed to preach homilies at Masses in this Country.
I wanted to do what I wanted, yet when that happens, the Holy Spirit normally takes over and wins and speaks through me. I arrived at the Catholic School about 8am and many brothers were already gathered and gathering around preparing for what was to be an epic day. The Nation of Suriname is only about 500,000 in population and out of that approximately 22% are Roman Catholic. This day marks the first Catholic Men’s Conference in the history of this Nation, and I was blessed to be the Keynote speaker.

There were several other speakers who gave witness testimonies as well as a very inspirational talk from my brother in Christ, Joel Freeman, who is the leader of the Catholic Men’s Ministry (CMM) in Georgetown Guyana. Joel traveled 12 hours from Guyana with a host of other brothers of whom I had not seen since I had last been to Guyana in 2014.

I was blessed to being my talk about 11:00am as I felt like a caged lion all morning waiting to be let out of his cage. Better yet, Michael Jordan waiting for tip off in game 7 of the NBA Finals, OR Mike Tyson waiting eagerly, savagely for the bell to ring to get in the ring and fight the GOOD fight for the Lord. Finally the bell rang and I was able to answer the bell and come out swinging.

With over 100 men in attendance (expectations were less than 50) these men came to this conference today hungry, with a wanton Spirit. They come from all walks of life, yet in search of one common thing… Salvation.

I spoke about the Prodigal son and compared him to most men, who are ‘in and of the world’ seeking affirmation of the world and seeking to devour the world, yet only to find when the money is gone and fame is fleeting, they are relegated to eating the pods of the swine. We humanity are in a world that, as Pope St. John Paul II called it, is being destroyed by relativism, moral relativism in particular; where we make something that is not of-God, yet the world see’s it as the ‘New Normal’ and accepts it, then when the sin sinks in totally we are like dogs returning to consume our own vomit. These men in attendance today were HUNGRY for LIFE… NEW LIFE… Hungry for something deeper than themselves. We talked about the forgiveness of God the Father and the forgiveness of the human father. One who has and continues to humble himself to this world.

Toward the end of the talk, I did an Altar Call; “If there is anyone within the sound of my voice who has not been baptized and you know this, and the Holy Spirit has touched you this morning, I want you to come forward.” Their was one young man, whose life was about to change… that came forward. He was about 14 years old and wanted to be baptized. Now I as a layman was not about to try to Baptize him, but we wanted to get him into the program if you will to become Catholic.

After I gave my Keynote so many men had come forward to receive the blessings of God, and hugged and blessed each other. There was a priest from Holland, (stationed in this diocese) who said, “Why wait? Why are we waiting to have this young man baptized? We need to do it NOW and worry about the paperwork later!” LOL I about lost it!

Afternoon Mass comes around and I am preparing my homily, (they changed the readings on me, not just prior to the Mass, but the other priest actually read the WRONG GOSPEL!) I see the holy water ready for the baptism, but I also noticed a few other bottles.

I did my homily and the men were on FIRE! Father asks the young man to come forward for Baptism and his father was with him. He was baptized. THEN, he was IMMEDIATELY Confirmed! I about lost it AGAIN! Finally at Communion… Father invited this young man to the Altar and he was given his FIRST HOLY COMMUNION! :-) I am CERTAIN this young man, when he woke up, had NO IDEA he was going to receive 3 of the 7 Sacraments of the Catholic Church on this day. His LIFE has truly been changed forever.
What are YOU waiting for? Paper work? God has already Called and Qualified you to GO and make disciples, so what are you waiting for, a written invitation? Check Matthew 28:19-20 their is your written invitation.
The face of WORSHIP, HEALING and LOVE was all over these 100 plus men today in Suriname and YOU my friends were part of making history today in this Nation!
Pray for us and we will continue to pray for you!

Nickerie, Suriname – woman comes BACK to Catholic Faith…

Preaching the Word of the Lord!

Preaching the Word of the Lord!

Preparing to receive the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ!

Preparing to receive the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ!

It keeps getting better with your help. Today I was able to travel 5 hours north from Paramaribo to Nickerie, Suriname. I was honored to be the Guest Preacher for Mass today. The Parish changed their Mass from the morning to 5pm this evening specifically to accommodate for my traveling here. People came as far as 2 hours away by vehicle to attend Mass to hear me preach.

First, the trip was not an easy one. Two lane highway (if you want to call it a ‘highway’) for five hours. Many parts of the road were covered in potholes, and even for about 15 Kilometers it was cobblestone. If you thing driving through Iowa watching the corn fields is boring, you should have tried this ride looking at Rice Patties for about 25km.

We averaged about 35 MPH (50KM) the entire trip. It was especially eye opening and humbling to see the shear poverty that some live in. Think about the home(s) you have seen in blighted areas in the States, that are abandoned, windows broken, tin roofs, that is what a lot of people LIVE in here in parts of Suriname. NOT ALL, but most are very very poor, but yet are happy. It was different to see children playing in the streets, playing in front of houses, playing with home made toys, which you do not see in the States much anymore, with their iPods, iPads, Xbox’s, etc.

I tried some indigenous food and drink, that was really awesome. I cannot tell you what the fruit was, but it was awesome.

Seeing the Coconut trees as well as the Banana trees along side the road and people selling them in make shift stands to make money was very humbling.

Your donations went to allowing me to speak and preach the Mass this evening to well over 150 people in attendance. The message was one of ‘Going forward’, to touch, love and heal the world. I was given the honor to not only preach the homily but also read the Gospel, which I was given the privilege of doing by the Apostolic Administrator for the Diocese here. It is Sede Vacante (Vacant Seat) until the Holy Father appoints a new Bishop.

While I was distributing Communion, I noticed a little boy about 2 years old, come to the Priest holding out his hand, as if he wanted to receive Communion. The Priest gave the little boy a blessing, but the little boy would NOT leave and he cupped his hands as to BEG to receive Jesus.

I thought that was the cutest thing I had seen in a long time, but it also made me think. 1. Children emulate what they see, in life especially in Church. If children do not see their father’s represented, they become distant from the Church. 2. The little boy approached with reverence; although at 2 years old I am not certain he can totally understand the Exegetical texts used within the Marcan Theology that was exposited at the Homily… (hope you like those big words) but he KNEW something was going on and it was very important. 3. He seemed to have been BEGGING for Jesus. He wanted desperately to receive Jesus and did not want to take NO for an answer. How desperate are YOU to receive Jesus and are you taking NO for an answer? Are you able to run to Jesus or does Our Lady of the Holy Pillow, hold you down on Sunday mornings? It seems more often that not, the power of the PILLOW is greater than the POWER of the Sarx – Flesh. I saw a little boy wanting, yearning, begging to receive Him. It made my heart sing and say, “Lord this is the Spirit in which I want to come to You and Your table every week, every day… with this Wanton and Yearning Spirit seeking Your Forgiveness, Your Mercy, Your Unconditional Love… and I am not taking NO for an answer, for Your Son said Yes for us all.

After the Mass, I had so many people come and tell me they were filled and renewed in their Spirit. One woman especially said, this was her first time back in the Catholic Church since she was a little girl (some 40plus years ago). She has been very bitter against the Catholic Church because her mother passed recently and she did not know how to get a Priest to come and anoint her mother. She converted to Pentecostal and went to a Full Gospel Church and was fed Spiritually and Emotionally, but had never had that experience again in the Catholic Church until this evening when she heard me preach. The Holy Spirit touched her in a way she had not felt since her mother took her to the Church. I not only thanked her, but encouraged her to come BACK! She said she was going to talk with the Priest and make this her NEW Church home… the CATHOLIC CHURCH!

Your love offerings and Donations are going to BRING people BACK to the Catholic Church, to bring people to the CHRISTIAN Church, to bring people to a NEW LIFE in Christ Jesus! Please help in any way you can.

Blessie!

The ROCK… Paramaribo, Suriname South America.

Penitentiary Duisburg Avenue. Paramaribo, Suriname, South America

Penitentiary Duisburg Avenue. Paramaribo, Suriname, South America

Years ago when I lived in Northern California, I visited the now closed and tourist attraction, Alcatraz Island. Home to some of the most notorious prisoners in U.S. History. This facility was closed on March 21, 1963 after 29 years in operation. I mention this because on July 9, 2015, I somewhat stepped back into time.

I was asked last week when I got here to Paramaribo, Suriname if I would be interested in doing a visit to a local prison. The gentleman said, “there might only be about 5 guys in attendance, would you still like to go?” My typical response, “if there are 200, I will go; if there are 20, I will go; if there are only 2, I will still go.”

As we pulled up to the facility which seemed to be well over 50-70 years old, set in the midst of a residential neighborhood, I noticed the 20’ plus high stone walls. We entered and rang a door bell next to a 15’ high steel roll up door. The door clicked and unlocked and we entered. This area was the holding area for trucks and vehicles entering the prison. You drive in, the door rolls down, and ultimately the door in front rolls up so you would be able to enter the facility.
We were asked for i.d. and I promptly handed my Passport to the guard who was a woman. Two women actually working the front gate of a faculty that holds 200 incarcerated men. Upon being cleared we were then ushered through a metal detector and then through a steel gate with keys that seemed as if they were handed down from Alcatraz. Three male guards, armed with older 9 millimeter side arms (they almost looked like 20 year old Browning 9 millimeters), to the office of the person in charge. Surprisingly it was a woman. Very welcoming, very kind, but also very stern and strict. Upon meeting and chatting with her for several minutes, mind you this is a Dutch speaking country and the majority of the inhabitants of this Nation are of African decent… meaning… the majority of them are Black people who speak Dutch. Fortunately while I was in the United States Army Military Police Corp, one of the many things I learned, aside from how to drink plenty of Schnapps, was how to speak German. German and Dutch are very similar languages and I am able to follow along in their conversations.
We were led to an area where the inmates would be gathered for worship if you will. Walking in 90 degree temps, sun BEAMING down upon us, walking through dirt and then a garden area next to a large stone facility we turned into the prison area. Walking through a corridor with large steel bars on my right and left, leading down a hallway of approximately 40 cell’s in each hallway. No air conditioning; no light; the cells seemed to be approximately 10’ X 10’. They seemed to keep the same ambiance that was placed in them 50 – 60 years ago when this facility was built.

When we turned the corner we heard signing… praise singing… male voices, more than 2; more than 20; there were approximately 35-40 men gathered on the patio singing and praising God. I was astounded to see these men who came out to hear a foreigner talk about God in another language that I was unsure they wouldn’t  even understand, but the Language of Love, the Language of Christ is understandable by all!

I must admit, earlier in the day I was concerned as to what I would talk with these men about. I had no idea who they were and they darn well certain had no idea of who I was (which I am nothing but a sinful man, saved by the Grace of God). I opened my Bible earlier that day and it opened to Paul’s letter to the Roman’s Chapter 8 beginning at verse 28 (for those of you who KNOW your Bible, your heart should be fluttering right now… YES you should be getting Holy Flesh when you just see, Romans 8:28) continuing to the end of the Chapter.

I was introduced by the man who invited me, who comes monthly to visit these men and pray with them and worship with them. Just an ordinary small Catholic Business man who believes in Prison Ministry. Once he introduced me, I welcomed them to praise God, “If you love Jesus and you KNOW HE is the head of your life I want you to stand and give him a SHOUT of PRAISE RIGHT NOW!” Well that set the tone for the next hour of preaching. I read the reading, it was translated in Dutch, I prayed and the Holy Spirit took over. It was AWESOME… Glory and Praise be to God! What a GLORIOUS time was had by all.

There I was surrounded by 40 men, incarcerated for everything from theft, assault, drug dealing, drug smuggling, manslaughter, rape, attempted murder and murder. We all continued to praise the NAME of the Lord and the Spirit preached to the souls held captive today. The Spirit of the Lord was truly upon me and He spoke Words of Life into men whose eyes were dark with death, hopelessness, depression and pure evil; the Lord spoke RELEASE to those who had not been just confined and imprisoned physically, but Spiritually.

Upon the conclusion of preaching I invited them to stand and receive God, if someone did not know Jesus, they were given an opportunity to stand and come forward and say “yes I want to know MORE about this Man named Jesus… this Man who say’s that ALL things are possible for those who love Him”. Several men came forward. I even gave the opportunity to those men who were behind the stone walls, but within the sound of my voice, those who were behind the cages and bars, the Spirit spoke to their hearts and His voice was heard by all… EVEN the JAILERS were spoken too and prayed for!

To see and worship and pray with these men, who are imprisoned in a facility that would make Alcatraz look like the Waldorf Astoria; a facility that has NO air-conditioning in 90 to 100 degree sweltering heat; a facility that you know has rodents running rampant, where men have even little of their dignity left, but for me to have been a short light in the darkness, was a great blessing.

Finally, before I left, I hugged each man who attended and as I prayed healing prayers and deliverance prayers over these men, I noticed one man who was continually wiping tears from his eyes. He came to me at the end and said, “I have been placed in charge of these men. I am their leader. The spiritual leader…” as he wiped tears from his eyes. “I am not a pastor, I am not a reverend, I am not an evangelist like you, I cannot preach like you and cannot motivate people like you, I don’t know what I am doing, but THEY are looking at me to be their leader and I don’t want to disappoint God. I don’t’ want to be responsible for their well being because I don’t know what to do. I am not the one… why has God chosen me?”

I smiled at him during his talking with me and I thought of myself. I asked someone 10 years ago… my wife… “why me, why am I being called to this, I am nothing, I am not a Priest, Deacon, Reverend, I don’t even know the Bible… why me?”  I responded to this man’s question, with the same response given to me 10 years ago by my wife, “Why NOT you? God has chosen you, over all people, He has anointed you, challenged you and COMMANDED you to GO… GO out and teach, anoint, minister and share the Good News that has been given to you.” The man wept even more and looked at me and said… “Yes sir, I will go. Yes sir, I will lead them. Yes sir, I WILL trust in the Lord, just please brother… pray for me because I cannot do it without your prayers.” I promised him I would pray for him daily.

Sitting back now, several hours later, preparing to preach tomorrow at this Nations FIRST ever Catholic Men’s Conference, I am humbled and honored to have been used by the Lord. I am humbled and honored and thankful to so many people, family, friends and those I have met along the way, who have shaped my path. “There go I, but for the Grace of God.” I should have been one of those men in prison; I should have been one of my classmates in Detroit who died in the streets, addicted to drugs, but through the GRACE… his AMAZING Grace, I have been saved. Through His Amazing Grace… others have come to know His Name, His Word and His Light in the Darkness and it is ALL for HIS Glory, Honor and Praise.
Thank You Lord for letting me see the Rock down under today. Thank You Lord for being my Rock, the Rock of Ages.

Thank You Lord for Your Amazing Grace.

I love you Suriname… thank  YOU!

OH…. IO!!!! Thank you New Middletown Ohio!

Preaching the Word

Preaching the Word

I cannot say enough about the love that has been poured out upon me from St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in New Middletown, Ohio. This has been one of the greatest experiences of my 10 year ministerial career. It is rare that a Parish truly welcomes and incorporates an outsider into a family member and I am truly thankful. The Holy Spirit has truly done some awesome things this past week; healings, blessings, anointings and so many other extraordinary Gifts given so freely to others. I am humbled to have been a part of this work.

Not only in the Parish, but some great High School young people I met who have and continue to be an inspiration to me. Thank you all so very much for your blessings, your prayers and your love.

I hope to return to New Middletown soon, but still have a few more days to let the Spirit go crazy! Thank You Lord!
